Culabra / Island of Puerto Rico

Island of Puerto Rico

I flew into San Juan, Puerto Rico, rented a car, and headed over to the hotel. I was staying in a Ritz hotel on this trip but found that its location had little interest. The following day I ventured out of San Juan down the back roads around the island’s coast. I came upon the rain forest, where I walked the trails and soaked up the cool random water sprays. At the top I could see all the way to the ocean.

I came across a resort toward the end of the island and moved from the Ritz to this newfound place. I learned how to scuba dive here and went out the next day for a 30-foot dive off the coast. It was fascinating. I was nervous until my feet hit the ground, and then I couldn't stop taking photographs despite the fact that I was using an inexpensive disposable camera.

I also took a drive south to see the caverns on the island and the observatory. At night I took time exposure photos of the palms trees lit only by the tungsten beach lights. Old San Juan was quaint and charming but overpopulated.

My plane ride home revealed some of the most beautiful sunsets I had ever seen.
