Oil Lamps

I received a hummingbird feeder about two years ago that I never figured out how to keep the food in. It turns out that vacuum plays a major role in keeping the liquid food in the feeder, which I learned several years later after I redesigned the feeder into an oil lamp. In any event it got me thinking about designing other oil lamps from blown glass. They were generally round and not made to stand on their own, so I needed some type of base.

The bird feeder hung from a loop made of glass at
the top of the feeder.

The base is made out of three pieces of 1-inch oak glued together. Graduated holes were cut into the two top pieces of wood. The top piece of wood has the largest hole. Using a router, I eased the edge of the hole where I placed the glass for a safe fit. I also beveled the outside of the base to smooth the visual transition as the lamp sits on a table.

This image has been shot from a lower vantage point and shot using no flash.

This image has been shot at a higher vantage point, and a flash was used to bring out the details in the glass.

This is a shot of the original ornament sitting on a base that I made for it. I will pull the hanger out of the glass section and install a glass wick holder to finish the piece.
