Electric Lamps

Mixing found objects and purchased objects, I created the four lamps below. I am drawn to these objects because of their natural beauty. While in Utah, I bought several pieces of quartz with the intent of incorporating them into a lamp. The idea further materialized after I studied how the quartz looked with light coming through it. I am drawn to the organic details that are very similar to what the universe looks like.

The lamp above was designed as a night light and has 5 blue and purple quartz pieces. Four of the pieces surround the lamp and one sits on the top. Quarter-inch oak was used on all sides. Holes were cut in each side to match the shape of the quartz. A slight router was also added to this hole on the inside to prevent the quartz from sliding out of its position.

Air slits were added to help vent the heat of the lamp. A fluorescent bulb is used to decrease heat emissions.

Small 1/2-inch pegs were added to the bottom to raise the lamp slightly.

The entire piece was finished with a wrapping oak molding.

The overall measurements are 6 and 1/2 inches square by 10 and 1/4 inches high.

The lamp above was created by necessity. I wanted something to fit with the rest of my Mission style furniture. Using a cream-colored piece of stained glass and oak corners, I designed and built this long lamp.

I broke off the height of the lamp by adding a small strip of blue glass at its top. The lamp is adorned by a pitched stained glass roof with a 2-inch pitch from the top.

Vent holes are included just under the lamp’s top, which is removable for light bulb changing. A fluorescent bulb is used to minimize heat buildup.

Small 1/2-inch pegs were added to the bottom to raise the lamp slightly.

The overall measurements are 7 and 3/8 inches square by 20 inches high.

This lamp has a 3-inch oak base and stands about 25 inches high. A large opening has been left at the top to help vent it. I designed this lamp to luminate a great area in the room. It holds a higher-wattage fluorescent bulb.

The blue strip that runs down the edge of the lamp has a reflective metallic quality and shows only when the lamp is turned off. It is important to make the lamp interesting to look at whether it is on or off.

This image was shot using a flash in order to show the outside details.

This image was shot using no flash. The light was left on during the exposure.
