Window Bench

After renovating my home, I found myself in need of a bench for my plants. I made the bench the same height as the window sill height in order for the plants to get even light. The design is very simple with its 2-inch-square oak legs and a simple 4-inch oak skirt. The top piece is a solid 1-inch by 12-inch piece of oak with a detailed inlay banding embedded into the top.

The hardest part of this project was making the groove for the inlay banding, which was 50mm wide. I left a half-inch border around the outside of the top to add interest. This also made it more difficult to cut the shallow groove into the oak. Once I glued the banding into place I coated it twice with tung oil to prevent the red oak stain from spilling into it and coloring it.

After sanding several times, I stained the rest of the piece, avoiding the banding. I restained the top part of the bench to achieve a richer tone and to add contrast from the bottom part of the bench. The entire piece was buffed and coated with tung oil. The top piece received four coats of tung oil. I buffed the piece between coats to help prevent water damage from the plants' potential spillage.

See the small table that matches this window bench.
