Coffee Table

The coffee table below was designed around a piece of wood that I harvested from a wood mill when I was 16 years old. My dad, who was selling cord wood at the time, was collecting several cords to resell. I went with him to pick up this order and I noticed a large, solid, 2-inch-thick, quartersawn oak slab. It was rough, but my dad assured me that it could be planed down at a local wood shop. I used this piece of wood as a table top for many years but finally found an opportunity to make something more interesting from it. It is the bottom shelf on the coffee table below. Using oak boards, I created the table below, doubling up the legs for a thick, solid look. I notched out a section for the large slab to rest on. The top consists of two 12-inch boards joined together with biscuits. I stained the piece with golden oak stain (see the top three images).

In an attempt to match the coffee table with its new surroundings, I stripped off the wax and golden oak stain and added a red oak stain. This color worked much better with the floor coloring and the surrounding furniture colors.

Finally I added several suede-covered boxes to add texture and warmth to the overall look.
