Bathroom Cabinet

|
I designed this bathroom cabinet because I needed more storage in the bathroom. I had a metal cabinet already in place but wanted to change it out for something visually interesting and to incorporate one of my photographs. I cut the drywall so the cabinet would sit between the studs in the wall. The new cutout is 14" by 63". I had to work around a wire that was in the wall that I didn't want to cut so I built a shelf just above the wire so it is not seen.

Working with a new transparent film material, I printed a black and white image and added a "rain" filter too. See right. The material was more than challenging to print! After a great deal of frustration and a complete redesign, I cut the piece into smaller sections which allowed me to get the material through my printer.

Since many areas in the image are white, they did not print onto the film and appear as clear. This allowed the mirror which sits behind the film to show through and be reflective. The image is sandwiched between a top 1/8" piece of Plexiglas and a 1/8" mirror. The mirror reflection and the filtered image give the appearance of an old-fashion mirror.
The oak frame on both the box inset and the door are stained in "Red Oak." A piano hinge allows the door to swing wide open or until it touches the door to the bathroom. The box is lined with cedar. The shelves are also cedar, which gives an aromatic scent to the room.
