Rural America
This series of images evolved after a drive through western New York. I was amazed at how many people spill their personal belongings out onto their property. I imagine what their homes’ interiors look like. My own parents, for example, have collected without throwing things out for some 60 to 70 years. They grew up during the Great Depression, when everything was scarce, especially money. I think this may play a role in their need to hang on to everything. My parents’ home has as much clutter inside as it does outside. I took several photos of their years of stockpiling.

What I find interesting is the emotional attachment to these objects. My photographs include images of painted fire hydrants, handwritten signs, and a general feel of small-town America.
This is a work in progress, so as I travel around the country I will continue to make images for a new book.
